HARRINGTON GAS CONVERSION

In May 2025, Xcel Energy completed the full conversion of Harrington Station from coal to natural gas. Originally brought online in 1976 as the company's first coal-fueled plant in Texas, Harrington's three units have long served as a cornerstone of regional energy production, boasting a combined capacity of 1,018 megawatts.
This shift to natural gas represents a critical move toward cleaner, more efficient power generation. It also builds on Harrington's legacy of innovation — from pioneering particulate capture with baghouses to now eliminating coal as a fuel source. With Tolk Generating Station set to retire in 2032, this conversion positions the Panhandle for a coal-free energy future.
